Mhondoro Game Lodge is a luxury, 5-star private game lodge in Welgevonden Game Reserve, a malaria-free Big 5 game reserve in Limpopo, South Africa. It is less than three-hours’ drive from Johannesburg or a 50 minute flight to the reserve’s air strip from O.R. Tambo International Airport, making it the ideal safari destination for those who arrive in South Africa via Johannesburg.
Mhondoro is the first South African lodge to offer intimate encounters with wildlife from an underground waterhole hide. Following a 65-metre-long concrete tunnel that connects to the main lodge, the hide gives visitors total safety as they get up close to elephants and other animals having a drink or a frolic. Welgevonden Game Reserve stretches across 35 000 hectares in the Waterberg and features a large white rhino population. Guided walks with trained game rangers are offered by special arrangement, providing an excellent chance of spotting these precious, endangered beasts in their natural environment.
Welgevonden Game Reserve is home to over 50 different mammals, including the Big 5. The diversity of habitats leads to a wide range of wildlife, with grassy plains abounding with antelope, from the largest eland to the diminutive duiker; and cheetah, lion and leopard are regularly seen close by. There are numerous rare and unusual species such as brown hyena, aardwolf, pangolin and aardvark – all best seen at night. Over 300 bird species can be seen on the reserve, including rare blue cranes which breed in the southern section early in the year.
A custom-built ‘Star Deck’ brings the African night sky to life in the evenings, giving visitors a glimpse at the Milky Way and the lower hemisphere’s famous Southern Cross constellation. Other luxury features include heated swimming pools for year-round swimming and a massage suite with an outdoor spa deck and bath.
Designed by celebrated Dutch interior designer Myriam Vogel, who co-owns the lodge with her husband Frank, Mhondoro is a fusion of local African design and European influences. The lodge is limited to 20 guests, housed in deluxe, executive and family suites. A romantic honeymoon suite is also available, complete with private pool and viewing deck.
The ultimate in luxury and privacy, Mhondoro Villa is perfect for families or groups of friends travelling together. Villa guests have access to exclusive amenities including a personal chef, butler and housekeeping staff, as well as a private yoga room, gym and heated pool. A game-viewing safari vehicle with personal ranger is also provided.
Mhondoro is known for its child-friendliness. Kids can enjoy the swimming pool and the safe, secluded playground with its protective elephant fence, or explore the bush during a guided bush walk. The spacious Family Suite and the exclusive-use Villa are perfectly equipped to accommodate families.
The Family Suite accommodates four people. It has two bedrooms and because of its shared bathroom, a lounge and a dining area, it’s the perfect accommodation for families. The spacious private viewing deck overlooks the waterhole. The Family Suite is a separate building, yet with all facilities of the Main Lodge within short walking distance.
The Villa is perfectly suited for exclusive family or group accommodation where every desire has been anticipated. Exclusive use of the Villa means that all meals and selected local drinks, a private pool, a private gym and yoga room, a private game viewing safari vehicle with personal ranger, a private chef, a private butler and housekeeping staff, are all included. The Villa accommodates six in stylish comfort. It boasts a magnificent master suite and two additional bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms.
All-inclusive rates start at ZAR 3,700 (approximately GBP 180) per person sharing per night (low season 1 May to 30 August 2016) and include all meals and selected drinks, twice-daily game drives/walks, reserve entrance fees and scheduled transfers from Welgevonden main gate.
